  • A pet friendly place shouldn't be one that just accepts pets. It should be one that takes them on numerous adventures.

One that lets them jump in the water and run around the space, one that worries about their safety and tends to their dietary concerns.

One that lets them be free, free to explore the infinite space with its trees and shrubs and insects and other animals and natural objects.

Take your pet out this monsoon. They'll love the rain.

  • The summers closing off and the monsoons reaching the hills make for a great time to go hiking here.

Unlike longer hikes, here you can do short hikes that take you to jungles, small waterfalls and streams. Equipped with raincoats and umbrellas, the monsoon hikes near Shitlakhet are brilliant experiences.

This one is a once-in-a-lifetime hike, But for the more adventurous. The paths are narrower and steeper and require more stamina and surefootedness.

Ironically, a hike challenging for us is just another day in Rekha's life.

  • It has always been a dream. A dream in this cynical world of P&Ls and YoY growths. It was a dream to refurbish Kumaon’s beautiful stone houses - the ones built painstakingly by hand and by community. Guests would see the best of Kumaon’s forests and orchards and would be hosted by the owners of these houses. Nayalap was named as the reverse of Palayan - to stem the exodus to the cities. This would be one of the ways.

The house would be a walk from the road. It would be in an orchard and right next to the forest path. It would have a small (not grand) fireplace, beautiful little windows to see the world through, modern comforts, and an Aangan to gaze at the valley from during the day. It would be noisy, with the sound of goats passing by, the sound of babblers and whistling thrushes in the distance, and the odd leopard’s call far away.

It would be humble, like the people who built the place, like the people who own the place. It would be exclusive - a place for yourself, where the entire Himalayas would feel like your own courtyard, one where you feel that you’re a small part of it.

Did you have this dream too? The dream to stay in a Paathar House?
  • It's a summer of berries. From Kilmora/ Barberry bushes, via Kafal/ Bayberry trees to Hisalu/ Himalayan Raspberry bushes.

It's a food tour masquerading as a forest walk this summer. It's sweet, it's tart, it's got big seeds and small.

You have it with mustard. You have it getting your hands dirty. You have it by the mouthful, or straight from the tree.

This bounty will last only for a couple of weeks more. Don't miss it.

  • It's the gentle summer breeze,
The one that kisses you softly on the cheek,
The one that plays with its strength and it's softness,
That sways the hydrangea and the lillies,
That flirts with the sweet williams,
The summer breeze that turns the oak leaves white,
And calls you to the hills.
